71. Mrs. Whiteasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies which detention camps in Kenya have been closed during 66W the past twelve months; how many are still in use; and how many detainees and Mau Mau convicts, respectively, are still in confinement.
§ Mr. ProfumoDuring the twelve months ending 31st October 17 emergency detention camps in Kenya were closed and 33 were still in use at that date. There were 16,385 detainees and 4,497 Mau Mau convicts then in custody.
Following is a list of the detention camps closed between 1st November, 1956, and 31st October, 1957:
Dondueni Camp, Gatundu Camp, Marigat Camp, Kathonzweni Camp, Ngulot Camp, Mageta Island Camp, South Yatta Camp, Mkobe Camp, Hindi Camp, Wattle Bark Camp, Thika, Nyeri Camp, Narok Camp, Mau Mau Investigation Centre, Embakasi, Nyakach Camp, Naivasha Camp, Njabini Camp, and Liliaba Camp.
