HC Deb 27 March 1957 vol 567 c113W
66. Sir F. Medlicott

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what is the cost per mile of providing kerbstones on main roads in rural areas; and if it is his policy to continue providing such kerbstones until all main roads throughout the country have been so dealt with.

Mr. Watkinson

My policy for trunk roads in rural areas, which I have also recommended to all other highway authorities, is that vertical kerbs should not be used except where a footway is close to the carriageway or where, for some other reason, it is dangerous for vehicles to leave the carriageway. For a single carriageway in a rural area the cost of kerbing, whether vertical, splayed or flush, is about £4,500 per mile of road.
