asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance how the amount of maternity benefit paid to employed women in respect of a confinement now compares with the corresponding amount paid to such a woman in respect of a confinement in 1948 at the commencement of the present scheme.

The present total is £50, or £46 when the confinement is in hospital, as compared with £27 8s. in 1948.
