Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for War how many officers in the Army of the equivalent rank of major-general or above were, on 1st January, 1957, employed in the War Office; what is the nature of their occupations; and what is the total cost per week in salaries and allowances of these officers.

Forty-one, whose pay and allowances amount to about £167,000 a year. Five are members of the Army Council and the rest are directors or inspectors.
