HC Deb 12 February 1957 vol 564 cc164-5W
82. Dr. Stross

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what representations he has received from the Polish Government for economic assistance; and what answer he has given.

Mr. Ian Harvey

No request for economic assistance as such has been received, but the Polish Government inquired early in December whether Her Majesty's Government could provide guarantees to enable Poland to purchase goods to the value of £40 million on commercial terms over five years, in addition to the purchases envisaged in the trade arrangement of 31st December. It was explained to the Polish Government that Her Majesty's Government were not in a position to provide such guarantees, but that the credit insurance facilities available to United Kingdom exporters should enable purchases of capital goods to be made on commercial terms. I under stand that Polish representatives are in touch with United Kingdom suppliers.
