HC Deb 05 February 1957 vol 564 c32W
51. Mr. Langford-Holt

asked the Prime Minister what consultation took place between the Governments of the United Kingdom and the United States of America prior to the announcement by President Eisenhower of the American Government's new Middle East policy; and to what extent British bases and British territory are to be made available to the United States land, sea, and air forces for the carrying out of this policy.

The Prime Minister

Her Majesty's Government were not consulted, but they welcome President Eisenhower's intention to put the resources of the United States behind the security and independence of the nations of the Middle East.

The proposals in President Eisenhower's statement are in the first instance designed to provide a legislative basis for future action. For the time being therefore the second part of the Question is hypothetical. No request has been made in this connection for the use of British bases or territory.
