HC Deb 17 December 1957 vol 580 c32W
Mr. Woodburn

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent he proposes to continue the policy of approving grants for fee-paying schools under education authorities; and what differences in curricula, quality of teachers or size of classes his inspectors report compared with similar classes in non-fee-paying schools.

Mr. Maclay

In charging fees in a limited number of their schools education authorities are exercising a power conferred on them by the Education (Scotland) Acts, and it is therefore proper that expenditure on such schools should be taken into account in calculating the main grant payable to authorities. In general there are no marked differences between fee-paying and non-fee-paying public schools as regards curricula, quality of staff or size of classes.
