HC Deb 17 December 1957 vol 580 cc29-30W
63. Mr. Lawson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he is taking to increase the number of day-release students attending Scottish schools.

Mr. Maclay

I am using all means at my disposal to encourage employers and students to take advantage of day-release courses. I am glad to say that there is a steady increase in the numbers attending, and I am urging education authorities to expand facilities by pressing on with a building programme designed to produce, a substantial number of new local technical colleges by the early 1960s.

64. Mr. Lawson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of day-release students at present enrolled in Lanarkshire schools; and how this number compares with the two previous years.

Mr. Maclay

The number of day-release students was 4,331 in session 1956–57, 4,075 in session 1955–56 and 3,695 in session 1954–55.

65. Mr. Lawson
