HC Deb 17 December 1957 vol 580 cc38-9W
Mr. J. E. B. Hill

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will so time the proposed importation of £100,000 worth of apples from the Lebanon as not to clash with the normal marketing of the home crop.

Sir D. Eccles

No, but licensing of imports under the special Lebanese quota did not begin until 21st November.

Mr. M. Clark Hutchison

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that, unlike those from Canada, crates of apples from Italy do not have the weights stamped on them; and if he will negotiate with the Italian authorities for this to be done, so as to remove the possibility of shopkeepers, or others, in this country receiving short measure.

Sir D. Eccles

Neither Canadian, apples, nor Italian apples, nor indeed apples from other countries, are generally imported in boxes stamped with the weight of the contents.
