asked the Secretary to the Treasury if he is aware that many firms and nationalised industries are still not sending duly stamped receipts for accounts amounting to over £2 paid by cheque or otherwise; and if he will make a further public statement to clear up the present continuing misunderstanding.

Mr. Powell

Yes. In general, the recipient of a payment is under no obligation to give a receipt if none is demanded, but he must give a stamped receipt for a payment of £2 or more if the payer asks for it. This has always been the position, and nothing in the Cheques Act has altered it.
