HC Deb 04 December 1957 vol 579 cc49-50W
94. Mr. Ernest Davies

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to what extent the Road Research Laboratory has expressed its approval of the two proposed underpasses between Piccadilly and Knightsbridge, neither of which will be able to carry more than one lane of traffic.

Mr. Watkinson

The scheme for an enlarged surface roundabout at Hyde Park Corner is based on recommendations to me, in which the Road Research Laboratory concurred, that it would provide a substantial reserve capacity for future traffic increase. Since then it has been decided to add an east-west underpass to accommodate one line of traffic in each direction as a further insurance for the future.

95. Mr. Ernest Davies

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he will invite one or more continental traffic engineers with experience in the planning of under-passes to relieve traffic congestion to give their views on the proposed underpasses between Piccadilly and Knightsbridge, which are each designed to carry one lane of traffic only.

Mr. Watkinson

No. I am satisfied that British technical advice is more likely to provide the right solution for our own traffic problems.
