HC Deb 02 December 1957 vol 579 c9W
61. Mr. Teeling

asked the Minister of Health why the Brighton Fish Market has not been renovated to comply with the Food Hygiene Act, which requires such renovation before June, 1957; who is responsible for carrying out such renovation; and to what extent the cost of such renovation will be reflected in an increase in rent, compatible with the means of the fishermen.

Mr. R. Thompson

The Brighton Corporation owns the fish market and is responsible for enforcing the Food Hygiene Regulations and for ensuring that its own premises comply. It has decided, I understand, that it would not be justified in spending the money necessary to reach minimum hygiene requirements. It would be for it in the first place to consider how far the cost of any renovation should affect market charges.
