asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how much British and United States capital, respectively, has been invested in each of the British Territories and Protectorates in Africa.

The detailed figures for which the hon. Member asks are not available, but total capital flowing into the British Colonial Territories in West and East Africa plus Aden during the years 1954–56 is estimated to have been about £150 million. Almost the whole of this is estimated to have come from the United Kingdom. The proportion coming from United States sources was small.
