HC Deb 02 May 1956 vol 552 c43W
76. Mr. Keegan

asked the Postmaster-General when automatic trunk dialling will be in general use in this country.

Mr. Alport

The first installation to enable subscribers to dial their own trunk calls will be brought into use at Bristol early in 1959, and plans for extension of the service are in hand. These will, I hope, enable a large number of towns to have this service in the years immediately after 1959, but we cannot yet draw up a definite programme. It is bound to be many years, however, before subscribers at all exchanges will be able to dial their own trunk calls.
