§ 62. Mr. D. Jonesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what reply he has given to the request of the Barbados Government for assistance including financial assistance to construct a deep-water harbour at Bridgetown in Barbados.
§ Mr. HareA request for technical advice in drawing up plans for the harbour has been met. My right hon. Friend discussed the question of financial assistance with the Premier of Barbados in February. It was then agreed that for the time being the Colony has enough money to carry out the next stage of its development programme as 39W planned. In order that the Barbados Government could go ahead with complete confidence it was also agreed that Her Majesty's Government would be prepared to provide further colonial development and welfare assistance within the terms of the current Act of Parliament if it later became clear that owing to the hurricane it would be impossible for the Barbados Government to carry out the agreed development plan without further help.
