HC Deb 15 March 1956 vol 550 cc59-60W
80. Mr. Russell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why overtime has to be worked in such Departments as the War Histories section of the Cabinet Office, the Historical Manuscripts Commission, the National Debt Office, the Friendly Societies Registry, the Charity Commission, the University Grants Committee, the Capital Issues Committee, the Public Works Loan Commission, and the Public Record Office.

Mr. H. Brooke

The offices to which my hon. Friend refers, like other Civil Service offices in London, at present work a standard working week of 45½ hours, which includes 31½ ours reckoned as overtime. This longer working week was decided on some years ago as a general measure to avoid adding to Civil Service numbers. The question whether it should continue was reviewed by the Royal Commission on the Civil Service, whose recommendations are now under consideration.
