HC Deb 04 July 1956 vol 555 cc113-4W
66. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the police have banned the holding of public meetings organised by the People's Action Party in Singapore; and, in view of the fact that this will create antagonism, if he will take steps to re-establish freedom of speech.

Mr. Hare

Permission to hold these meetings was withheld because the Singapore Government considered that they might at the present juncture arouse mass emotions which could lead to disorders. These are matters on which Singapore Ministers are best able to judge and in which I would not wish to intervene.
