HC Deb 15 February 1956 vol 548 cc260-1W
87. Mr. Lagden

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a further statement on economic and social progress in British Guiana.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Progress in the economic and social fields in 1954 was described in the booklet "Building Confidence" published by the Government Information Services and copies of this are available in the Library of the House. Expenditure on development in 1955 totalled about £3¼ million. The housing drive has gathered momentum and good progress has been made with self-help projects, drainage and irrigation work and improvements to transport facilities. Since June, 1954, the Credit Corporation has made loans totalling over £1,500,000 for housing, agriculture and industry. 5,000 new school places were provided in 1955. The co-operative movement has expanded considerably.
