asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what inquiries he has made as to the merits of the scheme for constructing on the 310 foot contour in England a new system of wide canals and a water grid.

I have made no detailed inquiries into this scheme, but on the broad issue I would refer the hon. Member to what I said in the answer which I gave him on 8th February about the impracticability of constructing a new canal system.
