HC Deb 15 February 1956 vol 548 c258W
72. Sir W. Wakefield

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies at what date, and why, the practice of the Governor's consent to the election of an Archbishop was altered; and if the Government of Cyprus was consulted before changing such a practice.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The decision to change the practice was taken in 1946. The right hon. Gentleman, the Member for Wakefield (Mr. Creech Jones), who was then Secretary of State said, in a statement to the House on 23rd October, 1946, that the retention of three local laws of 1937, dealing with this matter, seemed no longer to be justifiable; and that the decision that they should be repealed had been taken on the advice and with the concurrence of the Governor.
