HC Deb 05 December 1956 vol 561 cc138-9W
118. Mr. Mason

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made by the Gold Coast Government and the Opposition to resolve their differences on a revised constitution; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

In October the Gold Coast Government held talks about the constitution with representatives of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and of the Territorial Councils. Agreement was reached on several points. Since then, the Gold Coast Government have published in a White Paper their revised proposals and a note of the outstanding points of difference between them and the Opposition. I have placed copies of this White Paper in the Library. These latest proposals have been approved by a majority in the Legislative Assembly and are now being formally submitted to me. I should prefer not to make any further statement at the moment.
