HC Deb 09 November 1955 vol 545 cc191-2W
56 and 57. Mr. Remnant

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation (1) how many students for examination at the University of Southampton for Merchant Navy Certificates have been either deferred or transferred to other centres during the last six months;

(2) why examinations for the Merchant Navy at the University of Southampton cannot be held fortnightly.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

These examinations are held monthly at Southampton. To hold them fortnightly would require two sets of examination rooms and extra staff, which I do not think would be justified. Arrangements were made some time ago to obtain a larger examination room which would enable 50 per cent. more candidates to be examined in Southampton each month. This accommodation will be ready early next year. I regret that as no records are kept showing where candidates undergo their preliminary training I cannot say how many students from the University of Southampton had to be examined in other ports.
