HC Deb 04 May 1955 vol 540 cc126-7W
65. Mr. Stokes

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation in what respects the proposed scheme for constructing a roundabout at the Elephant and Castle, for which the estimated cost of land and easements is roughly £750,000, differs from the abandoned scheme proposed under provision of the London County Council (Improvements) Bill, 1930, for which the then cost of acquiring the necessary land and easements was stated by the Minister of Transport on 19th November, 1930, to have been £1,458,000.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The abandoned scheme provided for the construction of a semi-circular roundabout at the Elephant and Castle intersection, Walworth Road being the straight side. The proposed scheme is to provide a five-sided roundabout at the Elephant and Castle intersection and a smaller roundabout at the intersection of Draper Street and Newington Butts. Walworth Road will not continue as a through route.
