Mr. de Freitasasked the Assistant Postmaster-General whether he will intro duce legislation to prevent the commercial television operators holding discussions on political matters which are likely to be debated in Parliament within a fortnight in circumstances in which the Government prevents the British Broadcasting Corporation holding such discussions.
§ Mr. GammansNo new legislation is necessary. The power exists under Section 9 (2) of the Television Act, 1954. As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister indicated in reply to the right hon. Member for Smethwick (Mr. Gordon Walker) on 23rd February, it is intended that arrangements regarding B.B.C. broadcasts of this kind shall also be applied to the I.T.A.
