HC Deb 21 February 1955 vol 537 cc100-1W
72. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Health the average provisions cost, per patient per week, in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, the Llandough Hospital, the St. David's Hospital, Cardiff, and the East Glamorgan Hospital, respectively.

HOSPITAL EXPENDITURE ON PROVISIONS, 1953–54
—— Cardiff Royal Infirmary Llandough Hospital St. David's Hospital East Glamorgan Hospital
£ s d £ s d £ s d £ s d
1.Average cost per week of provisions, included in gross average cost per week of maintaining an in-patient 2 9 8 2 8 0 1 17 2 2 1 3
2.Average weekly cost of provisions per person fed 1 6 11 1 9 6 1 3 6 1 4 2

NOTE: Comparison of the figures in item 1 may be misleading because these are gross figures, unadjusted for differences in out-patient expenditure and staff ratios. The figures in item 2 have been included because they eliminate the effect of these differences.

Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Health (1) the cost, per patient week, of the net total standing charges in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, the St. David's Hospital, Llandough Hospital, and the East Glamorgan Hospital, respectively;

HOSPITAL EXPENDITURE, 1953–54
—— Cardiff Royal Infirmary St. David's Hospital Llandough Hospital East Glamorgan Hospital
£ s d £ s d £ s D £ s d
1.Average net cost per week of maintaining an in-patient (adjusted for notional outpatient expenditure) 17 9 1 11 15 8 19 2 10 14 18 1
2.Average cost per week, included in gross average cost per week of maintaining an in-patient, of net total standing charges 22 2 10 9 15 4 14 4 3 12 15 3

NOTES:
1. Cardiff Royal Infirmary and Llandough Hospital are general teaching hospitals. East Glamorgan is a non-teaching general hospital, and St. David's a non-teaching mainly general hospital.
2. The figures in item 2 are gross figures unadjusted for out-patient expenditure and comparison of costs may be misleading unless allowance is made for the relative proportion of out-patient to in-patient work. (At Llandough Hospital there were no out-patients.) For the rest, differences in cost may arise from differences in the kind and variety of treatment provided and, in the case of teaching hospitals, the extra responsibilities arising from their teaching work.
