HC Deb 07 February 1955 vol 536 cc167-8W
39. Mr. Royle

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the refusal of the Chinese Government to attend the meeting of the Security Council as an observer, Her Majesty's Government will now instruct their representative at the United Nations organisation, to press for the admission of the Chinese People's Republic into the United Nations organisation as a permanent member.

Sir A. Eden

I do not consider that the tone and content of the reply of the Chinese People's Republic to the invitation to the Security Council is calculated to promote a settlement of this question. The policy of Her Majesty's Government in the matter of Chinese representation remains as stated by the Prime Minister on 12th July.
