HC Deb 02 February 1955 vol 536 cc124-5W
Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent the police and military authorities have invited the co-operation of the leaders of the various communities and public men in Malaya; and how many conferences of such bodies have been held to create greater public confidence and to consider methods of settling the present emergency, other than by arms.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Four political leaders—one Malay, one Chinese, one Indian, and one European—are full members of the Director of Operations Committee, which meets every fortnight to direct the day-to-day conduct of the emergency. The Committee has under constant review all means of ending the emergency, whether by force of arms or otherwise. Similarly, wide representation has been established on all State, Settlement and district war executive committees, which deal with day-to-day operations against the terrorists and meet frequently.
