HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 cc333-4W
78. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to see that the conditions of the workers on the rubber plantations in Malaya are not affected in view of the increased production of synthetic rubber in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Government of the Federation of Malaya fully realise that natural rubber must be able to compete with synthetic. They have therefore reduced export duty on natural rubber at prices comparable with the prices of synthetic rubbers and have instituted replanting schemes designed to improve the efficiency of the industry and output per worker.
