HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 cc351-2W
Lieut. - Colonel Bromley - Davenport

asked the President of the Board of Trade which countries insist on goods imported from Great Britain carrying an indication that they have been made in Great Britain; and in what cases he has raised objections to such requirements.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

I understand that the following countries require certain imported goods to bear an indication of their country of origin: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, France, Haiti, India, Norway, Sweden, the U.S.A. I have not raised objections to this requirement. When replying to the hon. Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme (Mr. Swingler) on 29th November, 1955, I had in mind the undesirability of countries complicating the business of international commerce by placing unnecessary burdens on traders, and in particular the difficulties which we ourselves have experienced over the United States Custom's procedures, about which we have made representation.
