HL Deb 20 December 1955 vol 195 cc386-7WA
VISCOUNT FURNESS

asked Her Majesty's Government—

  1. (a) Whether they can give any date for the bringing into use of the various parts of the passenger terminal buildings to be completed at London Airport; in particular the accommodation to replace the temporary structures still in use at London Airport North;
  2. (b) Whether they consider that those facilities when completed will be adequate for the volume of traffic which will at that time be using them; and
  3. 387
  4. (c) if so, whether they consider that the passenger facilities at London Airport will remain adequate for some considerable time to come.

THE EARL OF SELKIRK

(a) The first passenger building came into use on 17th April, 1955. The second passenger building is expected to be completed in 1959 or 1960. It is hoped that will enable use of the temporary buildings at London Airport North for passengers to be discontinued.

  1. (b) The two passenger buildings together should then be more than adequate for the traffic using them.
  2. (c) These buildings should also be adequate for a considerable time to come, but the Central Area has been planned to accommodate a third passenger building comparable with the other two should this prove necessary.
