HC Deb 12 December 1955 vol 547 c125W
50. Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Health how many deaths have occurred in England and Wales from pulmonary tuberculosis in 1938, 1948 and for the last year for which figures are available; and how many anti-tubercular chest clinics were available in these years.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The number of deaths from respiratory tuberculosis in England and Wales fell from 21,282 in 1938 to 19,088 in 1948, and to 7,069 in 1954. At the end of each of those three years the number of chest clinics were respectively about 575, about 570 and 513: the annual number of clinic sessions however has risen steadily every year since 1949.
