Mr. Nield

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to make a statement as to the proposal by the Government of the Federation of Malaya to refund Income Tax collected upon gratuities to contract officers; and whether such refund has yet been, or is being, made.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Government of the Federation of Malaya have now agreed:

  1. (a) that the tax paid on their gratuities by contract officers who have left the service should be refunded; and
  2. (b) that the tax to be paid on their gratuities by officers serving on 20th January, 1955, in respect of their existing contracts, should also be refunded.
