HC Deb 21 October 1954 vol 531 c197W
51. Mr. H. Hynd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will introduce legislation to revise the scale of imprisonment in default of payment of fines in view of recent changes in the value of money.

Major Lloyd George

There is no fixed scale of imprisonment in default of payment of fines. The Criminal Justice Act. 1948, and the Magistrates' Courts Act, 1952, lay down maxima within which the courts have discretion to fix such terms of imprisonment in default of payment of fines as they consider appropriate in all the circumstances, and I am not satisfied that there is any case for amending legislation.
