HC Deb 24 November 1954 vol 533 cc133-4W
84. Mr. McKibbin

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in view of the unemployment situation in Northern Ireland, he will consider the possibility of allotting additional work to the Royal Naval Air Yard, Belfast, and so do away with the need for the discharges which have been notified.

85. Lieut.-Colonel Hyde

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in view of the approaching Christmas season, he will defer the present redundancies in the Royal Naval Yard, Belfast.

Mr. Digby

I regret that it has not been found possible to provide additional work suitable to the yard. The redundancies already declared cannot, therefore, be deferred. I should add that the number of men to be discharged is 31, which is under 5 per cent. of the present industrial strength of the yard.
