§ Mr. MarplesAt the end of September, 1954, there were about 4,400,000 retirement pensioners and 321,000 non-contributory old-age pensioners, of whom 983,000 and 158,000, respectively, were also receiving National Assistance grants, some of which covered the needs of more than one pensioner.
