HC Deb 27 May 1954 vol 528 cc38-9W
40. Colonel Stoddart-Scott

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many licences to control the movements of attested stock are issued each year; how many people are employed in maintaining this control; and what estimate he can give of the cost of imposing the control upon the farming community.

Sir T. Dugdale

Detailed records are not kept but it is estimated that 700,000 movement permits were issued in Great Britain last year. The work is done mainly in the Ministry's divisional veterinary offices. No staff are employed exclusively on it except for a few temporary attested sales assistants occasionally required at certain markets. The cost last year is estimated at £22,000.
