HC Deb 26 May 1954 vol 528 c27W
74. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent, and under what circumstances, Filipinos are entering and settling in North Borneo; what is the approximate number there at the present time; and what proportion of them apply for naturalisation.

Mr. Lyttelton

Many Filipinos come from the southern islands of the Philippines to the east coast ports of North Borneo to trade or in search of employment. The total number in North Borneo at the present time is estimated to be between 6,000 and 7,000. None of them has applied for naturalisation. Reliable figures of Filipinos permanently settled in North Borneo are not available.
