HL Deb 30 March 1954 vol 186 cc877-8WA
LORD METHUEN

asked Her Majesty's Government to confirm that the yearly grant-in-aid to the Tate Gallery for the purchase of works of art, now amounts to the sum of £6,250; and will they ascertain from the Trustees whether any or all of this grant in respect of the financial year 1954–55 has been earmarked for regularising the financing of purchases which had previously been made.

THE EARL OF SELKIRK

The grant-in-aid of purchases of the Tate Gallery for the current financial year is £6,250; in 1954–55 the grant-in-aid of this and other Museums and Galleries will be increased by 20 per cent. and it will then be £7,500. With regard to the second part of the Question, I would ask the noble Lord to await the publication, in due course, by the Tate Gallery Trustees of the annual report, which they foreshadowed in their report of 17th February.
