HC Deb 11 March 1954 vol 524 cc183-4W
Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action he is taking regarding the emigration of Maltese, in view of the over-population and consequent unemployment in that island colony; and whether he has considered the possibility of settlement in Kenya.

Mr. J. Foster

Emigration is a matter which falls within the competence of Maltese Ministers. Her Majesty's Government are keenly aware of Malta's overpopulation problem and are meeting two-thirds of the annual expenditure on an emigration programme put forward by Maltese Ministers up to a maximum contribution of £200,000 in any one year for a period of four years, commencing in the current financial year.

No proposals for any settlement of Maltese in Kenya are under consideration.
