60. Mr. Morley

asked the Minister of Education the amount spent on education, both tax-borne and rate-borne, for the year 1938, and what percentage that was of the national income and of the budgetary income, respectively; and if she will also state the comparable figures for the year 1953.

Miss Horsbrugh

In the financial year 1938–39 the total expenditure from the Exchequer and rates combined on educational services within the purview of my Department was about £97.4 million, equivalent to about 1.9 per cent, of the gross national product in 1938. The Exchequer charge included in the £97.4 million․about £49 1 million․represented about 5.2 per cent, of the total Ordinary Exchequer Expenditure of the United Kingdom. For 1953–54 the total estimated expenditure from the Exchequer and rates combined on educational services within the purview of my Department is about £366.3 million, equivalent to about 2.5 per cent, of the estimated gross national product. The estimated Exchequer charge included in the £366.3 million․about £233.6 million․represents about 5.5 per cent, of the Original Estimates of total Ordinary Exchequer Expenditure of the United Kingdom.
