§ 86. Mr. Ian Harveyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in what role those National Service men from the Royal Air Force who are now to do part-time service in Civil Defence will be employed; and for what length of time it has been arranged that they should be available in that role if hostilities against this country were to break out.
§ Sir D. Maxwell FyfeIt is contemplated that the men will be trained in peace, and mobilised in war, in Service formations under Service officers, but operating under Civil Defence control. The training will be designed to enable the men to perform Civil Defence duties in mobile columns, and the intention is that they should be made available for these duties during the first months, or even the first year of hostilities, according to the needs of the case.
