HC Deb 03 March 1954 vol 524 c90W
38. Squadron Leader Cooper

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what estimate he has made of the number of people who are in possession of wireless and television sets, respectively, but do not have a licence; what steps he is taking to detect such people; how many summonses were taken out during 1953; and what fines were imposed.

Mr. Gammans

No reliable estimate can be given of the number of people using wireless and television sets without licences. We make constant efforts to stop this abuse by means of detection vans and other checks by our staff. These resulted in some 9,500 prosecutions last year, with fines totalling over £20,000.
