asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations how many workers work in the Nauru Island phosphate industry; and what are the rates of pay and incidence of sickness and disease.

In accordance with the Trusteeship Agreement on the Island of Nauru, approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations in November, 1947, Her Majesty's Government in Australia are responsible for the administration of the Island. The published report to the General Assembly of the United Nations made by that Government on the administration of Nauru for the year 1952–53 gives the following information: There are in all 1,200 employees in the Nauru Island phosphate industry: Every labour contract must conform to minimum conditions and standards and be approved by the Administrator.
