HC Deb 04 June 1954 vol 528 cc121-2W
Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will give a detailed analysis of the voting strength of the various parties in the last November elections in the Sudan.

Mr. Nutting

I regret that the figures are not available for voting strengths of the smaller parties, but for the two main parties, the following are the figures for elections to the House of Representatives in direct election constituencies:

National Unionist Party Votes Umma Votes
Successful candidates 161,622 121,451
Unsuccessful candidates (approximately) 67,699 69,371
Approximate totals 229,321 190,822
Totals for National Unionist Party 229,321
Totals for Umma 190,822
Totals Independents and others 176,276
Grand Total 596,419

The result of the election in all constituencies direct and indirect, was as follows:—

National Unionist Party 51
Umma 22
Independents (North) 4
Independents (South) 4
Socialist Republican Party 3
Southern Party 10
Southern Political Association 2
Front against colonisation 1
Total 97

All these figures are based on the party allegiances on which candidates fought the election. There have been a number of transfers of allegiance by successful candidates since.

Figures of the distribution of votes between the parties in the Senate elections are not available, but the result of the election and of nominations to the Senate is given in the following table:—

BY election BY nomination Total
National Unionist Party 22 10 32
Umma 3 4 7
Socialist Republican Party 1 1
Southern Party 3 1 4
Independents (North) 1 2 3
Independents (South) 1 2 3
30 20 50

Very full statistical information about the election is to be found in a supplement to the Report of the Sudan Electoral Commission which was published in Command Paper 9058.
