ThomasThe accelerated rearmament programme which was launched in the early spring of 1951 envisaged the spending of up to £1,025 million on the Royal Navy during the three years 1951 to 1954. Actual expenditure over that period has been approximately £976 million; the exact figure for 1953–54 is not yet known.
The provision made in Navy Votes to meet price and wage increases between the end of 1950 and April, 1954, amounted roughly to £60 million.
