112. Mr. Norman Smithasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that, of 209,534 enrolments for part-time courses in further education centres in Scotland, only 1,108 are for mathematics and science; and what steps he is taking to increase this proportion.
§ Mr. J. StuartThe hon. Member is under a misapprehension. In Table 13 of my Report on Education in Scotland in 1953, enrolments are classified under headings which relate to the type of course followed taken as a whole. In addition to the 1,108 students who enrolled in courses comprising only mathematics or science, 4,532 students enrolled in courses of general education and 91,875 students in courses related to commerce and industry. Mathematics and science form a very important part of many of these courses.
