asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give an estimate of the total number of houses in Scotland.

The total number of houses in Scotland is now estimated at slightly over 1,500,000.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total number of subsidised houses in Scotland; and the annual amount of such subsidies.

The number of houses belonging to local authorities, new town development corporations and the Scottish Special Housing Association, for which Exchequer subsidy was paid during 1953. was 393,547; and the annual subsidy payment was £7,494,527.

It is estimated that nearly 750,000 houses in Scotland are rent restricted.
