HC Deb 25 February 1954 vol 524 cc43-4W
66. Mr. Steele

asked the Minister of Health if, in view of the recent case of typhoid germs being discovered in tinned food, he is prepared to use his powers to prevent the import of tinned foods from Ireland pending proper investigations.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

My right hon. Friend does not think that the circumstances call for this.

67. Mr. Steele

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that in the recent case of typhoid germs being discovered in tinned food, the tins were labelled, pure, homogenised and sterilised, but the statement from the makers only referred to pasteurisation; and if he will make inquiries.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

My right hon. Friend's officers have a tin of the cream so labelled and he has seen Press reports of a statement by the makers that the cream was twice pasteurised. Inquiries at the creamery are being made by the health authorities in Ireland.
