HC Deb 25 February 1954 vol 524 cc51-2W
Mr. Marquand

asked the Undersecretary of State for Commonwealth Relations to what extent changes are to be made in the respective responsibilities of British Council representatives and of information officers on the staffs of United Kingdom High Commissioners in India, Pakistan and Ceylon.

Mr. J. Foster

No changes are to be made in India and Pakistan where the British Council and the United Kingdom information officers are doing invaluable work in their respective spheres. In Ceylon it has been decided that the position will be met most efficiently and economically by the appointment of an education officer on the staff of the U.K. High Commissioner, and that the British Council should be withdrawn as soon as arrangements can be made.
