HC Deb 18 February 1954 vol 523 c236W
86. Mr. Morley

asked the Minister of Education the number of entrants into the teaching profession for 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953, respectively; and the total wastage due to death, retirement, marriage or other causes during those respective years.

Miss Horsbrugh

The following are the approximate numbers entering upon teaching for the first time in maintained primary and secondary schools (other than special schools) in the years mentioned, together with the approximate net wastage from those schools. The latter figure allows for the return to the schools of teachers previously in teaching service.

Calendar year Total recruitment Net wastage
1950 18,500* 11,500
1951 14,500* 8,600
1952 13,250 7,550
1953 (estimate) 13,500 8,100
*Includes some teachers trained at emergency training colleges and the special courses for unqualified teachers.
